Tuebrook pool reopens after six years of delays

The Peter Lloyd leisure centre pool in Tuebrook will finally reopen to the public on July 3, 2026, after being closed for nearly six years due to extensive renovations and repairs. Liverpool's leisure arm, Lifestyles, confirmed that robust testing of the pool facilities has been completed successfully, allowing swimmers to return.

Background of the closure

The pool, part of the Liverpool Council-run centre on Bankfield Road, has been shut since 2020 after refurbishment works significantly overran. The dry side of the venue reopened in July 2024, but the pool remained closed while defects were identified and resolved. According to documents seen by the Liverpool Echo, repairs totalling £118,000 were carried out, with nearly half funded from the residual Peter Lloyd refurbishment budget.

Repairs and revenue loss

Defective valves, pumps, and older control panels were replaced during the repairs. Liverpool Council lost approximately £50,000 per month in revenue while the pool was inoperable, as noted in a January report from Mark Lancaster, the council's business and strategic delivery manager. The 40-year-old equipment posed challenges during the replacement process.

New opening times

Lifestyles announced the new schedule on Facebook: weekdays from 7am to 9pm, and weekends from 8am to 5pm. The sessions include adult and family swimming, as well as children's classes. In the post, Lifestyles stated: "We understand some members may be frustrated by the length of the pool closure. Our intention was always to open the pool as quickly and as safely as possible, and we greatly appreciate your patience."
