Two people have been killed and 18 others injured after a truck ploughed into pedestrians at an outdoor market in Bucheon, South Korea, officials have said.
The driver, a man in his 60s, is being questioned by police. He was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to Son Byeong-sam, a police official in Bucheon, near Seoul.
Witnesses told investigators that the truck reversed about 28 metres (92 feet) before driving forward 150 metres (492 feet), hitting pedestrians along the way. The driver claimed his vehicle malfunctioned, and officials are reviewing security camera footage, said Park Geum-cheon of Bucheon’s fire station.
Two victims were pronounced dead at a hospital. Eleven of the 18 injured sustained serious injuries, but officials did not immediately say if any were life-threatening.
Photographs from the scene showed the truck wedged into a storefront amid debris, including toppled boxes, clothing and broken signboards. The front left side of the vehicle was mangled and its windows shattered. Officials later removed the truck to investigate the crash.
