A passenger train derailed after smashing into a lorry at a level crossing near Chýnov in the Czech Republic on Thursday at around 1.30pm. The lorry drove forward despite the warning bell sounding and the train driver sounding the horn.
Details of the Crash
The front of the train struck the side of the lorry cab, crushing it and sending debris flying. The impact caused one carriage to derail, leaving the tracks. The rail car came to rest diagonally across the tracks, leaning to one side, with smoke rising from beneath it.
Injuries and Rescue
The fire service rescued 25 people from the train, including 20 passengers. The lorry driver suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital in České Budějovice, conscious. The train driver and two passengers sustained minor to moderate injuries and were transported to hospital by paramedics.
Damage Estimates
Damage to the train was estimated at £172,000, damage to railway infrastructure at £3,400, and damage to the lorry at around £34,000.
Aftermath
The accident investigation concluded shortly after 5pm that day. The derailed carriage was lifted back onto the tracks at 7.44pm and removed shortly after 9pm. Rail services resumed shortly after 11pm.
