A man in his 30s remains in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen Mercedes, reaching speeds of 100mph and narrowly missing a pedestrian in south Manchester.
Dramatic Dashcam Footage Captures Pursuit
Unbelievable dashcam footage has revealed the intense chase between Greater Manchester Police and the driver of a stolen Mercedes CLC on Tuesday morning (June 16). The vehicle had been taken from Cheshire and was heading towards Greater Manchester when officers were alerted.
Traffic cops sighted the car on Hollyhedge Road and began pursuit. The driver accelerated to 100mph, ran red lights, and mounted the pavement, nearly striking a pedestrian and a front garden before crashing into a tree on Haveley Road in Benchill.
Arrest and Charges
The driver attempted to flee on foot but was detained at the scene. A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of burglary and dangerous driving and remains in custody for questioning.
Inspector Tony Allt from GMP's Tactical Vehicle Interception Unit condemned the driver's actions: “This was a high-speed and potentially dangerous incident which almost saw an innocent member of the public injured. The driver showed complete disregard for the safety of others, driving at 100mph across a usually busy junction – thankfully, at that time of the morning, there were no other vehicles on the road.”
He added: “Our collaborative work with other forces was clear to see last night; we acted upon Cheshire’s information and arrested the suspect within a few hours. It is another person off the streets who thinks they are above the law.”
