Stockport Roadworks on Bramhall Lane South for Five Weeks
Stockport Roadworks on Bramhall Lane South for 5 Weeks

Residents in Stockport have been warned they could face disruption during five weeks of roadworks on a key route. Gas company Cadent said temporary traffic lights will be in place on Bramhall Lane South, at its junctions with Handley Street and Broadoak Road, while engineers work to replace about three kilometres of piping.

Roadworks Start June 22

The roadworks begin on Monday, June 22. In a statement, Cadent said: "Cadent will begin essential work on 22 June to upgrade the gas pipeline along Bramhall Lane South, at the junctions of Handley Road and Broadoak Road, in Stockport. The existing pipe, installed in the 1960s, has reached the end of its operational life."

"This upgrade is part of Cadent’s commitment to future-proof the gas network, ensuring it is ready to support greener, cleaner gases and reduce methane emissions."

Scope of the Upgrade

During the year ending 31 March 2027, Cadent plans to upgrade around 400km of pipeline across the North West, including over 14.5km in the Stockport area. Over the 5-week period, engineers will work to replace approximately 3km of pipe.

Due to the location of the pipeline, four-way temporary traffic lights are in place on Bramhall Lane South with the junctions of Handley Road and Broadoak Road. Residents are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.

Environmental Benefits

Lucy Sterry, Head of Work Management in the North West for Cadent, said: “This project will guarantee residents receive a safe and reliable gas supply for decades to come. These upgrades also have big environmental gains, as they reduce methane emissions and enable a move to more renewable gases like biomethane. This is essential for a cleaner future – the UK will need energy to come from a range of sources to meet demand and be sustainable.”

“We are working closely with the local council to minimise disruption and are completing the works as quickly and safely as possible. Thank you to everyone for your understanding during this essential upgrade.”
