Dozens of Stockport Roads to Get 20mph Speed Limits and Parking Bans
Stockport Roads: 20mph Limits and Parking Bans Announced

Dozens of roads across Stockport are set to see 20mph speed limits and parking bans introduced following a series of area committee meetings last week. The changes include restrictions on waiting, permit parking schemes, new speed limits, and other measures aimed at improving road safety and encouraging alternative forms of travel.

Castle Hill and Battle Lane

A 'quiet lane' will be created on sections of Battle Lane and Castle Hill in Bredbury through a no waiting traffic regulation order. This is intended to promote walking and cycling. A width restriction of 3.5 metres will be implemented, and traffic will be directed to turn right out of a proposed development site. Initial public concerns were largely dropped after further explanation.

Poleacre Lane and Briarley Gardens

In Woodley, a new order follows complaints that vehicles parked near the junction of Poleacre Lane, Briarley Gardens, and Hyde Road caused visibility and access issues. A council report noted that out of 14 survey respondents, 86% supported the measures. One resident said it was 'the only way' to resolve the problem.

Love Lane, Heaton Norris

A resident permit parking scheme will be introduced on Love Lane, following a petition first submitted in 2015. Each household can have up to three permits at £47.50 per year, with discounts available. Enforcement will occur at least once a week, Monday to Saturday between 8am and 7pm. No waiting restrictions at any time will be enforced at the end of the road.

Elizabeth Mill and Poet's Corner, Reddish

Extensive changes in Reddish include no waiting at any time on multiple roads such as Leamington Road, St. Elisabeth's Way, and Higginson Road, among others. Limited waiting restrictions of 30 minutes (no return within one hour) will apply on Robert Street. A 20mph speed limit zone will cover numerous roads including Houldsworth Street, Liverpool Street, and Bedford Street. Issues were raised following complaints about larger vehicles struggling to turn from Coronation Street into Conway Street due to parked vehicles.

Didsbury Road

No waiting at any time and no loading Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm will be introduced on the south western side of Didsbury Road, from a point level with the projected western kerb line of Queens Drive for 85 metres.

Westholme Avenue and Crossley Road, Heaton Chapel

Existing restrictions on Crossley Road will be replaced with no waiting at any time on the north side from 10 metres west of the western kerb line to 10 metres east of the eastern kerb line.

Bus Lane Review

A council report stated that Transport for Greater Manchester provided additional funding in 2024 for improvements to bus stops and road markings. A review of bus lanes ensured enforceability and compliance. Signage will be updated for bus lanes on Lancashire Hill, Travis Brow, Portwood Roundabout, Didsbury Road, Macclesfield Road, Wellington Road South, Astley Street, and Great Edgerton Street.

Brooklyn Crescent and Turnfield Road, Cheadle

Following reports of vehicles parking on bends causing obstruction for large vehicles and safety hazards, double yellow lines were strongly supported by residents and will be introduced. Existing restrictions on Turnfield Road have been extended.

Parkway Estate, Cheadle Heath

A new 20mph speed limit zone was approved despite objections, with 64% of respondents in favour.

Finney Lane, Heald Green

New bollards will prevent drivers from parking on footways, as existing restrictions were circumvented by short-term parking.

Hibbert Lane, Marple

No waiting at any time restrictions will be introduced at the junction with Woodville Drive, with only two objections received.

Marple Community Hub

Councillors approved speed limits, waiting restrictions, a zebra crossing on Hollins Lane, and a toucan crossing on Stockport Road to support the community hub development. Parking restrictions will apply on Station Road, Garth Road, and other roads.

Forbes Road and The Quadrant

No waiting at any time restrictions will address safety concerns where vehicles prevented pedestrian footway use and obscured visibility.

Yew Tree Road

No waiting restrictions will be introduced near Bramhall Lane following safety complaints.

Simpson Street

No waiting restrictions between 8am and 6pm will address obstruction caused by parked motorists.

Beechfield Road, Clutha Road, and Frewland Road

No waiting at any time restrictions will support a new cycle and walking route, preventing cars from blocking dropped kerbs.

Chester Road, Woodford

No waiting restrictions between Moor Lane and Woodford Road will address issues from recent development.
