A reader has expressed no sympathy for Sony PlayStation after a week that saw the cancellation of Hideo Kojima's Physint game, poorly received Marvel's Wolverine reviews, and news about live service title Fairgames.
A week of setbacks for Sony
The reader, writing in a Reader's Feature for GameCentral, said they would not want to be an executive at Sony PlayStation this week. They noted that Xbox, which they described as having been "wearing clown shoes" since the Xbox One era, is now "running rings round" Sony.
The reader argued that Sony has been "off the boil" since the PlayStation 5 launched, particularly after the first year when they stopped making games, stopped doing interviews, and stopped having executives appear in State of Plays. They pointed to the company's shift towards live service games, with a promise of 12 such titles by 2026.
Kojima and Wolverine controversies
The reader highlighted the announcement that Sony would cancel Kojima's Physint game and cut ties with him. They questioned why Sony did not anticipate the issues with Kojima before signing the deal, given that they had handled both Death Stranding games for him. They noted that Kojima has now signed with Xbox.
The reader also mentioned that the embargo for Wolverine reviews was on Thursday, and that previews had already indicated the game would not be well received. They said that on the same day, Sony cancelled the Kojima project, found out their only Christmas game was a dud, and had news about their live service game leaked.
Lack of sympathy and communication
The reader said they have "absolutely no sympathy" for Sony, arguing that the company has brought these problems on itself. They claimed the issues have been building for at least five years and that Sony knows what it is doing is the opposite of what fans want.
They criticised Sony's communication with fans, noting that no one has explained the decision to go digital-only without a disc drive, aside from a blog post or tweet. They also referenced past incidents, such as removing movies just as they announced going all-digital, and updating terms and conditions to remind people they do not own digital content.
The reader concluded that Sony either is unlucky, stupid, or does not care, and said they are getting a Switch 2 for Christmas.
