Sky News presenter Saima Mohsin halted the usual rolling news broadcast to bring viewers breaking news about another train derailment. Just a day after the Southern Rail train derailment near Lewes, East Sussex, which left two people seriously injured, she reported on a second incident.
"Some breaking news to bring you, and...we're getting reports that a Greater Anglia train has derailed near Wickford in Essex. That's according to the Press Association Wire Service," she said. "...Of course, that follows the train derailment near Lewes train station this week. So, a Greater Anglia train has derailed, according to reports from the Press Association near Wickford in Essex. That's all we have so far on that story. But of course, as and when we get more, we will bring that to you," she assured viewers.
Lewes derailment details
She continued: "I mentioned, of course, that Lewes train derailment...British Transport Police have confirmed that two people are still in hospital with serious injuries. ...Their condition isn't considered to be life-threatening but serious. 18 other passengers were taken to hospital for treatment but have now been discharged.
"The derailment there happened just before 4 p.m. yesterday near Lewis Railway Station, with investigators now assessing whether the hot weather could have contributed," she said.
Latest incident near Wickford
This latest derailment occurred at approximately 2.12pm today, British Transport Police (BTP) said, confirming they were dispatched to the scene alongside paramedics and the fire service. It happened on the line between Wickford and Rayleigh and major disruption on the rail network was confirmed by the railway operator on their site on Friday August 14, as they informed customers of travel issues between Southend Victoria and Wickford.
The Department for Transport has confirmed no passengers have been injured in this latest incident and said they have already sent investigators to examine the site.
Response and reassurance
A spokesperson for the department said: "We are aware of a derailment involving a Greater Anglia train near Wickford, Essex. The train is upright, there are no reported injuries and investigators have already been deployed to the site."Our railways remain amongst the safest in the world and while incidents like this are extremely rare, when they do occur, they are taken very seriously."
Despite the lack of casualties police, paramedics, and the fire service have attended the scene.
