A sinkhole has opened up on Crosby Road South in Seaforth, closing two southbound lanes and causing heavy traffic and long tailbacks. The hole appeared on Wednesday, July 22.
Council and utilities respond
A Sefton Council spokesman said: “We are aware of an issue on Crosby Road South, and there is currently a southbound lane closure in place. We have been working with United Utilities who will be investigating and fixing the issue. Works to repair the road will take place when investigations are complete. We will ensure disruption during the repair is minimised as much as possible.”
The sinkhole is located between Seaforth Road and Church Road. A United Utilities spokesman said the company was expected to meet with Sefton Council on Thursday, July 23. They said: “We are working with Sefton Council to establish the cause of the road collapse, and a survey of the sewer network is due to take place this week. Traffic management remains in place to help ensure the area is safe while investigations continue.”
Oil spillage in Bootle
Meanwhile, Balliol Road in Bootle remains partially closed due to an oil spillage from A565 Derby Road to Hugh Baird College. The spillage was reported on Monday, July 20, when a Sefton Council spokesman said teams were working to ensure the road was safe to reopen. Sand has been scattered over the spillage to absorb the substance and restore traction.
In an update on July 22, a Sefton Council spokesman said: “The lane closures on Derby Road and eastbound road closure of Millers Bridge remain in place. Due to the extent of the spillage, a specialist cleansing team has been deployed and are working hard to clear the hazard as soon as possible. The road will be reopened once it is safe to do so, which we estimate to be next week. In the meantime, we continue to encourage motorists to find alternative routes through Bootle.”
