The M48 Severn Bridge was closed in both directions on bank holiday Monday, April 6, following a medical incident. Emergency services, including paramedics, police, and an air ambulance, attended the scene, leading to a closure of over an hour.
Traffic monitoring sites reported congestion on the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge as drivers were diverted. Inrix noted queuing traffic on the M48 from junction 2 (Chepstow) to junction 1 (Aust), with tailbacks affecting the M4 westbound.
Avon and Somerset Police led the response, supported by the South Western Ambulance Service, Traffic Officers, and National Highways teams. The incident was initially expected to clear between 5pm and 5.15pm, but the bridge reopened earlier.
Traffic England attributed the closure to a medical emergency on the M48 westbound entry slip at junction J1. Motorists faced delays until the police incident cleared and the bridge was fully reopened.
