Passengers can now experience one of Britain's most breathtaking railway journeys for just £1.50, as the iconic Settle-Carlisle line commemorates its 150th anniversary with a series of special events and promotions.
Anniversary Celebrations and Discounted Travel
Northern Rail is set to provide thousands of £1.50 tickets for travellers on this renowned scenic route over the coming months, marking a significant milestone in the railway's history. The Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company has orchestrated a full year of festivities, including a chartered steam train service operating between Carlisle and York on Monday, 25 May, as part of the celebrations.
Scenic Splendour and Tourist Appeal
The railway line, celebrated for its stunning vistas of the Pennine Hills, Yorkshire Dales, and Cumbria's Eden Valley, remains a top attraction for tourists. It features the majestic Ribblehead Viaduct, a quarter-mile-long structure with 24 arches standing 104 feet high. Earlier this year, Lonely Planet recognised the Settle-Carlisle line as one of the top 10 most scenic train trips in Europe, underscoring its global appeal.
Record Passenger Numbers and Future Projections
In 2025, Northern Rail recorded 995,000 passenger journeys on the line connecting Leeds, Settle, and Carlisle, the highest annual total since the Covid-19 pandemic. August emerged as the most popular travel month last year, with 96,000 journeys. Alex Hornby, Northern's commercial and customer director, expressed confidence that the line will surpass 1 million journeys this year, attributing its popularity to the ever-changing, breathtaking scenery and ample exploration opportunities.
Historical Significance and Community Engagement
Completed in 1875 after a demanding construction project involving 6,000 workers, the Settle-Carlisle section spans 72 miles and includes 14 tunnels and over 20 viaducts. Pete Myers, chair of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, highlighted the line's unique role in connecting communities from Yorkshire to Cumbria while offering a sustainable and picturesque way to explore regions like the Yorkshire Dales, Westmorland Dales, and Lake District. The anniversary year features close collaboration with local communities to host events accessible via this award-winning railway.
