A multi-vehicle collision on the M62 eastbound near Heywood and Middleton has caused severe delays and lane closures during the morning rush hour. The crash occurred between junctions 18 and 19, close to the Simister Island interchange.
Emergency services, including Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service, attended the scene. At least four vehicles—a van and several cars—were involved in the incident. Traffic was temporarily held at around 9:15 am as authorities managed the scene.
Traffic monitoring service Inrix reported severe delays and the closure of three of four lanes. Congestion extended to the M60 at junction 14 (Swinton Interchange) and affected the M61 southbound and M62 westbound approaches.
National Highways confirmed a full closure initially, with one lane reopening around 10 am before being closed again. By 11 am, two lanes had reopened, allowing traffic to pass slowly. Motorists were advised to expect delays and use diversion routes.
