Scotland's railway network is facing severe disruption as extreme weather conditions batter the country, forcing widespread cancellations and delays across key routes.
Widespread Travel Chaos
ScotRail has implemented significant service alterations after Network Rail imposed speed restrictions due to torrential rain and high winds. Multiple routes have been completely suspended, leaving commuters and travellers stranded across the country.
Affected Routes and Services
The disruption has particularly impacted services between Glasgow Queen Street and both Oban and Mallaig, with all trains cancelled until further notice. The West Highland Line has seen severe disruption, affecting travel to popular destinations including Fort William.
Other affected services include:
- Glasgow to Aberdeen via Dundee
- Edinburgh to Aberdeen via Dundee
- Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk High
- Alloa to Stirling and Dunblane services
Safety First Approach
Network Rail Scotland confirmed that speed restrictions were necessary for passenger safety. A spokesperson emphasised that reducing train speeds during extreme weather is a crucial safety measure to prevent accidents and ensure infrastructure protection.
"The safety of our passengers and staff remains our top priority," the spokesperson stated. "These precautions are essential when dealing with the current weather conditions."
Weather Warnings in Force
The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for rain across much of Scotland, with particular concern for the Strathclyde and Highlands regions. Forecasters predict persistent heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding in some areas, exacerbating the travel disruption.
Passengers are being urged to check their journeys before travelling and allow extra time for their trips. ScotRail has confirmed that ticket holders can use their tickets on alternative routes or travel on different dates due to the exceptional circumstances.
