A popular Spanish airport is set to close for five weeks this spring to carry out runway resurfacing works, resulting in the cancellation of all flights during that period.
Closure Details
Santiago-Rosalia de Castro airport in northern Spain will be closed from 23 April to 27 May. During this time, the airport will be closed to all air traffic, and no take-offs or landings will take place.
Airport operator Aena advised passengers: “If you have any questions about your flight status, schedule changes, or possible rebooking, we recommend contacting your airline.”
Impact on Airlines and Passengers
The airport near Santiago de Compostela is the busiest in Galicia and the second-busiest in northern Spain. Several airlines operate flights from this hub, including British Airways, Ryanair and Vueling. Hundreds of journeys are expected to be affected, particularly during the May half-term holiday period.
Strike Action at Other Spanish Airports
In addition to the closure, holidaymakers face severe disruption across Spain due to an “indefinite” strike by airport ground staff. Industrial action by Groundforce and Menzies employees has been ongoing at 12 major airports since 30 March, including Barcelona, Madrid, Alicante, Palma, Ibiza, Malaga and the Canary Islands. The strike is over an ongoing pay dispute.
Aena stated: “Groundforce staff have called an indefinite strike starting 30 March. Partial work stoppages will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during three time slots: 5-7am, 11am-5pm, and 10pm-midnight. Please contact the airline to find out the status of your flight.”
Passengers are urged to check with their airlines for the latest information on flight status and potential rebooking options.
