Ryanair has issued a critical alert to all passengers with booked flights, marking what the budget airline describes as an "important update" in its operational procedures. This change, implemented in recent months, introduces a fully digital boarding pass system, eliminating the acceptance of printed passes entirely.
The Four-Step Digital Check-In Process
To board their flights, travellers must now adhere to a strict four-step process via the Ryanair app. Firstly, passengers need to open or download the Ryanair application on their mobile devices. Secondly, they must sign into their myRyanair account and locate their specific booking details. Thirdly, the usual online check-in procedure should be completed through the app. Finally, passengers can access their digital boarding pass directly within the application. Ryanair emphasises that this streamlined approach is designed to be simple and efficient for all users.
Rationale Behind the Digital Transition
The airline transitioned to this digital-only system in November 2025, with Ryanair stating that the move aims to reduce operational costs, enhance service quality, and provide environmental benefits. According to the carrier, this shift also makes travel quicker, easier, and less stressful for passengers. Notably, Ryanair revealed that approximately 90% of its passengers were already utilising digital boarding passes prior to the full implementation, indicating a high level of existing adoption.
Financial Penalties for Non-Compliance
Any passenger who fails to check in online through the Ryanair app will be subject to an airport check-in fee, adding extra charges to their travel expenses. To assist passengers, Ryanair continues to send email reminders for online check-in both 48 and 24 hours before the scheduled flight departure, ensuring travellers have ample opportunity to comply with the new digital requirements.
