Receiving post intended for someone else can be frustrating, but Royal Mail has clear guidance on the correct procedure. The company explains that if you get mail with your address but the wrong name, it's because they deliver to addresses, not names.
What to do if the name is wrong but the address is correct
If the item has your address but a different name, Royal Mail advises: "You can cross out the address, write 'Not known at this address' or 'No longer lives here,' and drop it in a postbox." Once the item reaches the sorting office with your message, Royal Mail will "try to return it to the sender so they can update their records."
However, if you receive a 'Something for you' card with the wrong name, Royal Mail recommends throwing it away, as after the holding period, the item will be returned to the sender.
If the address is also incorrect
If you receive mail that is not in your name or address, Royal Mail apologizes for the mistake and advises: "Please drop the mail in a postbox when you can. There's no need to add postage. We'll handle it from there and deliver it to the correct address." If you can't repost the item, you can contact Royal Mail for further assistance.
