The Queensway (Birkenhead) Mersey Tunnel will be closed to all traffic on four consecutive nights while essential maintenance work is undertaken. The Kingsway (Wallasey) Mersey Tunnel will remain open during the closures.
Closure schedule
The tunnel will be closed from 21.00 on 31 August through to 06.30 on 1 September; from 21.00 on 1 September through to 06.30 on 2 September; from 21.00 on 2 September through to 06.30 on 3 September; and from 21.00 on 3 September through to 06.30 on 4 September.
Motorists are advised to allow additional time to complete their journey while the works are underway.
Additional road restrictions
Liverpool City Council has also issued a notice under Section 14 of The Road Traffic Regulation Act, 1984, to prohibit vehicles from entering, proceeding or waiting in reserved bus lanes on Irvine Street and Mount Vernon Road. The restrictions apply at any time on Mondays to Sundays inclusive, from 8 September 2026 to 8 March 2028, or for a lesser period dictated by the earlier formal introduction of an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order required to monitor the impact of a reserved bus lane.
Exemptions apply to public service vehicles, local buses, coaches, hackney carriages, licensed private hire vehicles, police, ambulance, fire service or statutory services, postal operators, local authorities in pursuance of their essential duties, emergency liveried NHS vehicles used for urgent transport of blood, tissues and organs, vehicles used by His Majesty’s Prison Service or their contractors for prisoner transportation, and pedal cycles or electrically assisted pedal cycles not being motor vehicles.
Public open space disposal and Wirral road closures
The council has also given notice of its intention to dispose of public open space land at Rice Lane Recreational Ground, Rice Lane, Liverpool, L9 2BL, by granting easements for underground electricity lines with associated rights for access and maintenance of the cables. Representations or objections must be made in writing to the Property and Regeneration Team, Legal Services, 4th Floor, Cunard Building, Water Street, Liverpool, L3 1AH, quoting reference Legal/AI/21660648, no later than 10am on 11 September 2026.
Wirral Borough Council has issued temporary road closure orders for Fort Street, Wallasey, from its junction with Magazine Brow to its junction with Aylesbury Road, with an alternative route via Fort Street, Nelson Street, Magazine Lane and Magazine Brow. The order comes into force from 7 September 2026 and will last for 18 months or less, with works anticipated to be completed by 28 September 2026.
A further order will close a slip-road linking King’s Parade to the junction of Atherton Street and Pilots Way in New Brighton, and prohibit southbound traffic on Atherton Street between King’s Parade and Wellington Road. The alternative route is King’s Parade, Portland Street and Wellington Road, with works anticipated to be completed by 30 September 2026. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained in both areas.
