Alternative Routes

The Kingsway (Wallasey) Mersey Tunnel will be open throughout the works. Access between Birkenhead and Liverpool city centre is available via Kingsway and the surrounding road network, subject to normal traffic conditions. Drivers approaching from the M53, A41 and A59 can adjust routes to connect with Kingsway.

Reason for Closure

The works are essential maintenance to keep the tunnel operating safely and reliably. Overnight hours have been chosen to limit disruption during the day. No daytime closures are included in this notice.

Impact on Buses

Some cross-river bus services may be diverted via Kingsway during the closure times. Passengers should check with operators for live updates and any late timetable changes before travelling.

Journey Planning Advice

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for cross-river trips during the closure windows. For destinations in L1 or CH41, follow signed diversions for Kingsway. Consider Merseyrail services between Liverpool and Wirral outside overnight hours. Check for other planned works on approach roads, including the M53, A59 and city centre routes. Overnight deliveries and trades should confirm arrangements with clients and suppliers.

Local Traffic Impacts

Traffic volumes may be higher than usual near Kingsway toll plazas and on approach roads including the A59, Scotland Road and Dock Road in Liverpool, and the M53 and A554 in Wallasey. Short queues are possible around 9pm as closures begin. Those with concerns or who believe they may be adversely impacted are encouraged to seek further information from the tunnel operator.
