Qatar and Etihad Ease Loyalty Rules Amid Travel Slump

In response to a significant downturn in air travel across the Middle East, linked to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways have announced major modifications to their loyalty programmes. These changes are designed to offer greater flexibility and support to frequent flyers whose travel plans have been disrupted.

Etihad Guest Lowers Qualification Thresholds

Etihad Airways has implemented a substantial reduction in the qualification requirements for its Etihad Guest loyalty programme. Effective from 18 March 2026, the airline has lowered the threshold by 25 per cent across all membership tiers. This adjustment allows members to retain or upgrade their status with fewer miles, making it easier to achieve elite benefits during a period of reduced travel activity.

The move aims to provide greater flexibility for members whose travel plans may have been affected in recent weeks, according to the airline. The reduced qualification criteria will remain in effect until 31 March 2027, offering a long-term reprieve for loyal customers.

Qatar Privilege Club Extends Tier Statuses

Similarly, Qatar Airways has made adjustments to its Privilege Club loyalty programme. The airline is extending tier statuses for members whose renewal was due, ensuring they can continue to access their benefits without interruption. This extension helps maintain customer loyalty and provides stability during uncertain times.

Impact on Flight Operations

Both airlines are currently operating at significantly reduced service levels due to the conflict. Etihad Airways is running at approximately 25 per cent of its normal capacity, while Qatar Airways is operating at around 15 per cent. This sharp decline in flights has prompted the airlines to implement additional measures to support passengers.

In a further gesture of flexibility, Etihad is offering free cancellation for bookings made until March 2027. This policy allows travellers to adjust their plans without financial penalty, reflecting the broader challenges facing the aviation industry in the region.

The modifications to the loyalty programmes by Qatar and Etihad highlight the broader economic and operational impacts of geopolitical tensions on air travel. By easing requirements and extending benefits, the airlines aim to retain customer loyalty and navigate the current downturn effectively.
