White Bridge in Pontypridd is set to close for a week for corrective works following a major restoration scheme. The bridge, also known as Berw Road Bridge, will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians from 8am on Monday, August 10, with the closure removed on or before Sunday, August 16.
Reason for closure
The work is being coordinated alongside the demolition of Pontypridd Police Station and the Berw Road car park site. The listed structure was damaged in Storm Dennis, and Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council worked with Cadw on a restoration scheme completed in summer 2024. That scheme included several hundred individual concrete and structural steelwork repairs, bridge deck waterproofing, and replacement of the highway drainage system and surfacing.
Following additional repairs and a maintenance inspection last year, an extra road closure is needed this summer for further corrective work. Contractor Concrete Repairs Limited requires the closure to safely access the underside of the bridge. The repairs are being carried out by the original contractor for the restoration scheme, with no further cost to the council.
Works and diversions
Next week's scheme will include localised repairs to the gunite applied to the bridge – the protective layer protecting the structure's concrete. Corrective works will also take place on paintwork on the underside of the bridge and parapets, replacement of the deck joint sealant within the carriageway, and a single resurfacing repair.
An alternative route for motorists from south of the bridge will be via The Parade, West Street, Bridge Street roundabout, Bridge Street, and Berw Road. In the opposite direction, the route is via Berw Road, Bridge Street, West Street, Middle Street, Bonvilston Road, and The Parade. Access cannot be maintained for emergency service vehicles or pedestrians.
