Berw Road car park in Pontypridd town centre is set to close permanently next week ahead of demolition and redevelopment, Rhondda Cynon Taf council has announced.
Closure Date and Details
The car park will close at the end of the day on Thursday, July 30, with all vehicles required to be removed by 7pm. From Friday, July 31, the site will remain closed to allow for preparatory works before demolition contractor Prichards takes over in the first week of August.
Council officials stated that demolition works are expected to start from Monday, August 3, with further announcements on traffic management and disruption to follow.
Redevelopment Plans
The closure follows the transfer of the former Berw Road police station building to the council, which closed at the end of June 2026. Proposals for the final project are still being developed, with options including an improved public space, a modern replacement car park, better walking and cycling links, junction improvements at Bridge Street, and opportunities for new residential, commercial, and cultural uses.
Alternative Parking
Alternative council-operated town centre parking is available at Catherine Street, Gas Road (short stay), Millfield Road, Goods Yard, and Sardis Road, all within approximately a five-minute walk of Taff Street and Ynysangharad War Memorial Park. These facilities offer more than 1,000 spaces combined.
Policing Continuity
South Wales Police confirmed that policing provision in Pontypridd will continue, with officers responding to emergency and non-emergency calls and neighbourhood teams remaining active. Until a new Pontypridd station is established, residents can attend Talbot Green Police Station (1/3 Heol y Gyfraith, Talbot Green, CF72 8AJ), where the front desk is open from 9am to 5pm seven days a week.
