A person has died after being hit by a train in Northumberland. Emergency services were called to the railway line between Hexham and Haydon Bridge at 6.35am following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

The person was struck by a train and pronounced dead at the scene. Train lines were closed, and services were cancelled, delayed or revised.

Disruption on Northern routes

The incident has affected the Northern train line and routes between Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Carlisle. National Rail said disruption between Carlisle and Newcastle is expected to continue until 11am.

National Rail said: "The emergency services dealing with an incident between Hexham and Carlisle means all lines are currently closed. As a result, trains will be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised."

Police confirm death

British Transport Police confirmed that a person had lost their life and said they were not treating the incident as suspicious.

A spokesperson said: "We were called to the railway line between Hexham and Haydon Bridge at 6.35am on 5 October following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

National Rail said Northern customers could travel on the next service to their destination where available. Northern train ticket restrictions, including Advance and Peak restrictions, have been lifted in the affected areas during the disruption.
