HM Passport Office (HMPO) has issued a reminder to people applying for a new or replacement passport about what to expect, clarifying that supporting documents are usually returned separately from the new passport and may arrive at a different time.
In a recent post on X, formerly known as Twitter, HMPO said there is "one application [and] two deliveries", describing this as "totally normal". The post adds: "Supporting documents are usually returned separately from your new passport and may arrive at a different time. Same application. Separate deliveries. Nothing unusual."
Passport validity rules for travellers
Anyone in the UK wishing to travel overseas requires a valid passport, and applicants must hold British nationality to apply for or possess a British passport. Entry requirements vary between countries, so it is essential to verify how much validity remains on your passport before arranging any trip.
For example, UK travellers planning to visit the Schengen zone must ensure their passport's "date of issue" falls within 10 years from their arrival date. Additionally, the "expiry date" must extend at least three months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen area, which includes Spain, Greece, France, and Italy, among many others.
Those travelling to Turkey must possess a passport with an expiry date at least 150 days beyond arrival and one blank page. Visitors heading to Dubai or other UAE destinations need passports valid for a minimum of six months from the date of entry.
Passport fees and processing times
A standard adult passport for those aged 16 and above costs £102 when applying online, or £115.50 through the paper application. For children, the fees stand at £66.50 or £80, respectively.
HMPO states that a new passport should arrive within three weeks of submitting an application. Those requiring urgent processing can opt for the Premium Service (one day), which costs £239.50.
While the majority of applicants must pay for their passports, certain individuals qualify to receive one entirely free of charge. If you were born on or before September 2, 1929, you can apply for a new British passport or renew your existing one without any cost.
