Passengers aboard an Iberia flight from Madrid to Paris have described moments of sheer panic after a large bird struck the aircraft, causing significant damage and forcing an emergency landing. The incident occurred on Sunday evening shortly after takeoff from Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport.
The bird strike ripped off a large section of the nose cone and damaged the weather radar antenna. The cabin filled with smoke, prompting passengers to manually deploy oxygen masks. One passenger told of the panic, saying, 'We couldn't breathe.'
The crew contacted air traffic control and requested an immediate return to Madrid. The flight was given priority landing on runway 32L, with emergency services on standby. The aircraft landed safely approximately 50 minutes after departure, and no injuries were reported.
Air traffic controllers praised the crew's professionalism, stating that their actions avoided more serious consequences. Iberia confirmed that the flight, IB579, was struck by a large bird impacting the front section and one engine. The airline arranged a recovery flight for passengers later that evening.
Videos shared on social media showed passengers visibly upset with oxygen masks on. The incident has highlighted the dangers of bird strikes, which can cause severe damage but are rarely catastrophic.
