Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has confirmed traffic management plans for the main demolition phase of Pontypridd police station and Berw Road car park, starting August 3. A one-way system will be introduced at Morgan Street near the bus station.
Traffic measures from August 3
From August 3, a section of Morgan Street alongside Pontypridd bus station – from its junction with the A4223 for around 80 metres – will become one-way. Traffic from the main road can still turn onto Morgan Street and access the bus station as usual. Vehicles approaching from the northern end must detour via Chapel Street to reach the main road.
The footway next to the police station and car park will be closed, with alternative pedestrian routes signposted.
Further disruption expected
Additional short-term traffic management is planned at Berw Road near the pharmacy and medical centre, and at Bridge Street in front of the police station, to install scaffolding. These will cause local disruption, the council said, and dates are being finalised. The work is coordinated with repairs to Berw Road Bridge (White Bridge), which will remain open during the Berw Road closures.
Background and future plans
The Berw Road car park closed permanently on July 30. The former police station building has been transferred to the council, with a new police base at Taff Street opening soon. The council is exploring a mixed-use development for the sites, including potential public space, replacement car park, walking and cycling links, junction improvements, and residential, commercial or cultural uses. Demolition is expected to finish in early 2027.
