One person has been taken to hospital after a collision in Houghton-le-Spring. Emergency services were called at around 12.17pm on Sunday to a road traffic incident near Houghton Road in the Grasswell area.

Paramedics at the scene

Paramedics were dispatched to the scene with significant delays for drivers facing diversions while the incident was dealt with. A person was transported to Sunderland Royal Hospital for further treatment.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic incident near Houghton Road in Grasswell, Houghton Le Spring at 12:17 on Sunday 4 October.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew and one patient was taken to Sunderland Royal hospital for further treatment."

Traffic returns to normal

Traffic returned to normal just after 2pm. Northumbria Police has been contacted for a comment on the response to this incident.
