One Dead In Denmark Train Collision

At least one person has died and 18 others were injured, five critically, after two trains collided head-on near Hillerød, north of Copenhagen, on Thursday morning.

The crash occurred at a level crossing on the Gribskov line just before 6.30am. Emergency services attended the scene, where photographs showed one train with its front end severely crushed.

North Zealand police said technical investigations are ongoing but declined to comment on the cause. All 37 passengers were evacuated, and a military helicopter helped transport the injured to hospital.

Acting Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed being 'very moved' by the accident, while Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson offered assistance, which Danish police declined.

The safety director of Lokaltog, the operator, stated that a head-on collision 'should not be possible' given signalling systems and driver training. The accident investigation board is examining possible technical issues with signalling and human factors.
