Oldham is set to experience more roadworks on key A and B roads than any other area in Greater Manchester, according to the latest data from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM). Drivers have been updated on the disruptions, which include closures and temporary traffic lights across the region.
Why Roadworks Cause Frustration
Roadworks are carried out for various reasons, such as road improvements, emergency repairs, and utility company work. However, a 2025 parliamentary transport committee report highlighted that they can be a source of frustration, causing congestion and delays that harm the economy, disrupt transport services, and limit access to high streets and businesses.
Oldham's Roadworks in Detail
In Oldham, several major routes are affected. The A671 Rochdale Road northbound in Royton is closed due to roadworks from B6195 Middleton Road to Radcliffe Street until 29th January 2027. King Street southbound is closed for electricity work from B6477 Manchester Street to Union Street West until 10th August. The A669 Chew Valley Road in Greenfield has temporary traffic lights for gas main work at St Mary's Drive until 20th July. On B roads, B6189 Drury Lane near Hawksley Industrial Estate has temporary traffic lights for electricity work until 22nd July, while B6195 Middleton Road in Royton has two sets of temporary traffic lights for roadworks until 29th January 2027.

A34 New Bailey Street has roadworks and a contraflow at Gore Street until 18th May 2027. A5066 Ordsall Lane in Salford Quays has temporary traffic lights for roadworks at Taylorson Street South until 8th January 2027.

A560 Hyde Road in Woodley has roadworks and restrictions between A627 George Lane and Mill Lane until 28th August. A560 Stockport Road East and A627 George Lane both have temporary traffic lights for roadworks until 28th August. B6101 Strines Road in Ridge-End has temporary traffic lights for electricity work until 23rd July.

A57 Mottram Moor eastbound has one lane closed for long-term roadworks from Stalybridge Road to A6018 Back Moor until 31st December 2027.

A58 Gerard Street in Ashton in Makerfield is southbound closed for roadworks from A5062 Wigan Road to A49 Bryn Street until 22nd November. A580 East Lancashire Road eastbound in Golborne has one lane closed for roadworks from A573 Warrington Road to B5207 until 30th September. A573 Ashton Road and B5207 Ashton Road both have temporary traffic lights for roadworks until 14th August.
