Old Trafford Parking Crackdown: Eight Roads Face Red Routes

Eight roads around Old Trafford football ground are set for new parking restrictions, including the introduction of red routes where stopping is banned at any time.

Trafford council says the area is experiencing 'high levels of parking demand on a daily basis' from commuters and match-goers, causing 'obstructions' and 'significant congestion'. The authority has received road safety concerns from police and ward councillors.

Roads Affected

The roads identified for intervention are: John Gilbert Way, Europa Gate, Pomona Strand, Cornbrook Road, Westinghouse Road, Fraser Place, Europa Circle and Europa Way.

Red routes – no stopping at any time – will be introduced on John Gilbert Way, Europa Gate, Europa Way, a small section of Fraser Place, and part of Westinghouse Road between Mosley Street junction and Europa Circle. The rest of Westinghouse Road will have 'no waiting at any time' restrictions.

Additional Measures

'No waiting and no loading' rules will apply on Cornbrook Road, the Bridgewater Way slip roads, and the adopted section of Pomona Strand near its junction with Trafford Road.

Trafford council hopes the measures will 'deter the inconsiderate and obstructive parking' and 'improve access and visibility for all road users'.

A decision report states: 'The locations above are experiencing high levels of parking demand on a daily basis for commuter parking which in turn is causing an obstruction and preventing access. In particular on John Gilbert Way, access is prevented for various haulage businesses due to inconsiderate parking which is reducing their ability to carry out daily operations.'

The report adds that during event periods at the nearby stadium, the surrounding highway network experiences significant congestion, with vehicles parked obstructively on carriageways and footways. Even vehicles waiting for a limited duration can contribute to prolonged obstruction and reduced network efficiency.

The proposed restrictions are set to be advertised locally. If no objections are raised, they will be adopted. If objections are received, they will be reported back for consideration.
