Norwich Airport has cancelled all flights today, Friday, August 28, after workers began a 24-hour strike. The airport is closed to air traffic for the day, meaning no flights will be able to take off or land throughout Friday.
The walkout involves Prospect union members working in Air Traffic Control and comes amid an ongoing dispute over pay, terms and conditions.
Which flights are affected?
Among those affected are passengers travelling with KLM and Ryanair. Three arrivals from Amsterdam have been cancelled, along with a flight arriving from Alicante. Departures affected include four flights to Amsterdam and one to Alicante.
Norwich Airport normally operates flights to a number of destinations overseas, including routes to Spain and the Netherlands.
Airport statement on the strike
In a statement, Norwich Airport said: “Due to the 24-hour strike by Prospect union members in Air Traffic Control, Norwich Airport will be closed to air traffic on Friday 28 August and no flights will operate to or from the airport that day.
“Airlines have been informed. Passengers due to travel on Friday should check with their airline for the latest information about their flight and the options available to them.
“We apologise for the disruption and inconvenience this will cause to passengers.
“We remain firmly committed to resolving this dispute through constructive dialogue and will continue to engage with Prospect with the aim of reaching agreement.”
Passengers redirected to Southend
Some holidaymakers have been told they will need to travel elsewhere to catch their flights. Local travel agents told holidaymakers on Thursday that some would instead have to travel 101 miles to Southend Airport in Essex to catch their flights.
They were told to make their way to Norwich Airport first before being taken by coach to Southend to catch their flight.
