A number of road closures and temporary traffic lights are in place across the North East this week, affecting drivers in Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Northumberland, Sunderland, and County Durham. The works range from electricity and gas main repairs to road improvements and demolition-related closures.
Newcastle
In Newcastle, electricity work on Fawdon Walk at Brunton Lane will cause traffic to take turns until 11th August. Gas main work on Walbottle Road between The Green and Dene Terrace will bring temporary traffic lights until 18th August. On Cardigan Terrace at Heaton Road, gas main work will also cause temporary traffic lights until 21st August.
Roadworks on Wansbeck Road from Rothbury Avenue to Park Avenue will bring delays with temporary traffic lights until 24th August. On A186 Westgate Road at Lewis Drive, temporary traffic lights are in place until 25th August. Electricity work on Coley Hill Close at Ladybank will cause traffic to take turns until 26th August, while gas main work on Coppice Way at Napier Street will continue until 27th August.
Temporary traffic lights are on B1600 Forth Banks at Hawthorn Square until 31st August, and on A193 Shields Road at Stotts Road until 18th September. Gas main work on Heaton Road at Heaton Park View will bring temporary traffic lights until 7th October. Market Street Eastbound is closed from Pilgrim Street to Carliol Street until 9th October, and B1311 Gallowgate at Strawberry Lane has temporary traffic lights until 27th February 2027.
Worswick Street is closed from Pilgrim Street to Carliol Square until 10th April 2027, and Whitehouse Road in Scotswood is closed between Armstrong Road and Walwick Fell until 18th July 2027. On A167 Tyne Bridge, a lane is closed with a 30 mph speed restriction and narrow lanes until 16th June 2028.
Gateshead
In Gateshead, telecoms work on Pennyfine Road will bring temporary traffic lights until 11th August. Water main work on The Meadows at Dene Crescent will cause temporary traffic lights until 14th August. Gas main work on A692 Lobley Hill Road between Schoolhouse Lane and Scholars Close will continue until 21st August.
Hawks Road and Quarryfield Road are both closed in both directions until 21st August to ensure smoother detour routes from the Park Lane roundabout closure for the demolition of the Gateshead Flyover. Gas main work on Easedale Gardens will bring temporary traffic lights until 26th August, and on A167 Durham Road at Vigo Lane until 28th August.
On A194 Leam Lane, a lane is closed with temporary traffic lights between B1306 Mill Lane and A194(M) J3 White Mare Pool Roundabout, with work scheduled between 19:40 and 6:00 Mondays to Sundays until 10th September. On B6317 Whickham Highway, temporary traffic lights are in place until 4th November.
North Tyneside
In North Tyneside, water main work on Jesmond Park West at Glendyn Close will cause temporary traffic lights until 11th August. On Middle Drive at Eastern Way, temporary traffic lights are in place until 13th August. Gas main work on B1319 Northern Terrace between Watson Avenue and Hedgefield View will continue until 14th August.
Roadworks on B1322 at Eccleston Close will bring temporary traffic lights until 17th August. Gas main work on Earsdon Road at Co-Operative Terrace will continue until 21st August, and telecoms work on B1319 Market Street between Ethel Street and Tantallon Court until 27th August. Water main work on Thinford Road between Bridge Street and A177 will cause temporary traffic lights until 28th August.
Electricity work on A191 Rake Lane between A192 Preston North Road and Barnstaple Road will bring temporary traffic lights until 11th September. Gas main work on Cauldwell Lane between Crawford Place and Front Street will continue until 18th September. Nelson Street is closed between Swinburne Place and Lambton Street until 2nd October, and Pilgrim Street Southbound is closed from New Bridge Street West to Swan House Roundabout until 9th October 2026.
One lane is closed on A192 Preston North Road Northbound from A1058 Beach Road to Hartburn Road for junction improvements, upgrading footpaths and crossings, until 10th November 2026. Pottery Lane is closed from B1600 Forth Banks to Shot Factory Lane until 31st March 2027, and B1317 Killingworth Lane has temporary traffic lights until 22nd September 2027.
South Tyneside
In South Tyneside, River Drive in South Shields is closed between B1303 and Salem Street until 31st August. Roadworks on B1298 Abingdon Way between Witney Way and A184 Newcastle Road will bring temporary traffic lights and delays until 18th December, and on Didcot Way at B1298 Abingdon Way until the same date.
Northumberland
In Northumberland, water main work on B6524 in Whalton will cause temporary traffic lights until 11th August. The B6309 at Black Heddon is closed between Belsay Turn off and Black Heddon until 12th August. Water main work on Eilansgate in Hexham will bring temporary traffic lights until 12th August, and on Hauxley Lane in High Hauxley until the same date.
Roadworks on B1329 Regent Street in Blyth between Crawford Street and Wright Street will cause temporary traffic lights until 14th August. On B6320 Church Lane in Wark, temporary traffic lights are in place until 17th August. Roadworks on B1331 Ridge Terrace in Bedlington between Westmorland Avenue and Netherton Lane will continue until 21st August.
Mitford Road at Morpeth is closed from A192 Newgate Street to St Leonards Lane until 31st August. Gas main work on A696 Cheviot View in Ponteland between B6545 Rotary Way and Cecil Court will bring temporary traffic lights and delays until 25th September. Electricity work on The B6295 in Cornriggs will cause traffic to take turns until 6th October.
Roadworks on Moorland Avenue in East Sleekburn will cause traffic to take turns until 13th November. The B6321 at Corbridge is closed between the B6259 and the A695 until 22nd December, and roadworks on Sandfield Road in East Sleekburn will bring temporary traffic lights until 22nd January 2027.
Sunderland
In Sunderland, gas main work on B1291 Southwick Road at Morgan Street will bring temporary traffic lights until 14th August. Elmwood Avenue is closed from North Hylton Road to Oaklands Crescent until 2nd September. Lane closures are in place on B1260 Gillas Lane West in Houghton-le-Spring until 13th October.
Mowbray Road is closed between Salem Street South and Suffolk Street until 31st December, and Easington Street is closed between Millennium Way and Hay Street until 9th January 2029.
County Durham
In County Durham, B6302 Northbound at Esh Winning is closed from Station View to Fair View until 12th August. Electricity work on Ashby Crescent in Blackhill will cause traffic to take turns until 12th August. Gas main work on Front Street in Great Lumley will continue until 28th August. Electricity work on Benfieldside Road in Shotley Bridge will bring temporary traffic lights until 1st September.
Electricity work on Stanhope Close in Brandon will cause traffic to take turns until 2nd September, on Lilac Park in Ushaw Moor until 4th September, on Penryn Way in Brandon until 7th September, and on Maple Park in Ushaw Moor until 10th September. Water main work on B6306 in Edmundbyers will bring temporary traffic lights until 2nd November. Narrow lanes are in place on Framwelgate Waterside in Durham from Sidegate to Millburngate until 31st December 2027.
