North East roadworks and closures: full list for Aug 24 week

Multiple road closures and temporary traffic lights are in place across the North East this week, affecting drivers in Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Northumberland, Sunderland and County Durham. Some roads are fully closed while others have lane restrictions, and delays are expected on several key routes.

Newcastle and Gateshead closures

In Newcastle, temporary traffic lights are active on Wansbeck Road at Coxlodge until 16:00 on 24th August, and on A186 Westgate Road at Arthurs Hill until 0:59 on 25th August. Gas main work on Coppice Way and Walbottle Road will cause traffic to take turns until 27th and 28th August respectively, while roadworks on B1600 Forth Banks and A193 Shields Road will see temporary lights until 31st August and 18th September.

Market Street Eastbound is closed from Pilgrim Street to Carliol Street until 9th October, and Worswick Street is closed from Pilgrim Street to Carliol Square until 10th April 2027. Whitehouse Road in Scotswood is closed in both directions until 18th July 2027. On the A167 Tyne Bridge, a lane closure, 30 mph speed restriction and narrow lanes are in force in both directions until 16th June 2028, with delays expected.

In Gateshead, temporary traffic lights are in place on Easedale Gardens at Harlow Green until 26th August, and on A167 Durham Road at Birtley until 28th August. The A194 Leam Lane has a lane closure and temporary lights between B1306 Mill Lane and A194(M) J3 White Mare Pool Roundabout, with works running from 19:40 to 6:00 daily until 10th September. The A167 Gateshead Highway is closed in both directions for major works to demolish the flyover between B1426 High Street West and Hawks Road, until 18th May 2027.

North Tyneside and South Tyneside

In North Tyneside, temporary lights are on B1319 Market Street at Dudley until 27th August, and on Thinford Road at Metal Bridge until 28th August. Electricity work on A191 Rake Lane at Murton will see lights until 11th September, and gas main work on Cauldwell Lane in Monkseaton continues until 18th September. Nelson Street is closed between Swinburne Place and Lambton Street until 2nd October, and Pilgrim Street Southbound is closed from New Bridge Street West to Swan House Roundabout until 9th October 2026.

One lane is closed on A192 Preston North Road Northbound for junction improvements, upgrading footpaths and crossings, until 15:30 on 10th November 2026. Pottery Lane is closed from B1600 Forth Banks to Shot Factory Lane until 31st March 2027, and B1317 Killingworth Lane has temporary lights near Simonside Way until 22nd September 2027.

In South Tyneside, River Drive in South Shields is closed between B1303 and Salem Street until 31st August, and Inverness Road is closed between Perth Avenue and Iona Road until 8th September. Temporary lights are on B1298 Abingdon Way and Didcot Way in Boldon Colliery until 17:00 on 18th December, with delays expected.

Northumberland and Sunderland

In Northumberland, temporary lights are on Haugh Lane until 25th August, and on B6318 at the B630 until 27th August. Mitford Road at Morpeth is closed from A192 Newgate Street to St Leonards Lane until 17:00 on 31st August, and Vulcan Place is closed from Schalksmuhle Road to A193 Front Street until 4th September. Gas main work on A696 Cheviot View in Ponteland will cause delays until 25th September, and electricity work on B6295 at Cornriggs continues until 6th October. Hallstile Bank Northbound is closed from Hallgate to Haugh Lane until 31st October, and B6321 at Corbridge is closed between B6259 and A695 until 22nd December.

In Sunderland, Elmwood Avenue is closed from North Hylton Road to Oaklands Crescent until 2nd September, and Mowbray Road is closed between Salem Street South and Suffolk Street until 31st December. Easington Street is closed between Millennium Way and Hay Street until 9th January 2029. A lane closure on B1260 Gillas Lane West in Houghton-le-Spring, due to gas main work, remains until 13th October.

County Durham works

County Durham has the most extensive list, with temporary lights on Mendip Avenue, Grasmere Road, Rydal Road and Leadgate Road until 24th-25th August, followed by water main work on Black Boy Road and A689 until 26th August. Telecoms work on A691 at Langley Lane will cause delays until 26th August, and gas main work on A167 Durham Road at Vigo Lane continues until 28th August. Several roads in Meadowfield, Seaham, Shotley Bridge and Great Lumley have lights until late August, with further works on Tyne Road, B1278 Salter's Lane and B6313 North Burns into early September.

Longer-term closures include Wansbeck Avenue until 1st September, Hustledown Road until 16th October, B6306 at Edmundbyers until 2nd November, and Heathway until 10th November. Narrow lanes are in place on Framwelgate Waterside in Durham from Sidegate to Millburngate until 31st December 2027. Drivers are advised to plan ahead and expect delays on affected routes.
