Newcastle Airport has advised travellers to allow extra time this weekend as the Metro will be closed for nine days for repairs. No trains will run between the airport and South Gosforth from 5am on Saturday, August 15 until 11.59pm on Sunday, August 23.
Repairs and replacement buses
The closure is necessary for work on tracks, stations and cabling. Replacement bus services will operate during the period. Trains will continue to run elsewhere on the system, but revised timetables may be in place.
Travel North East advises: "Your journey will take longer, so please plan ahead and leave extra time for travelling."
Recent airport upgrade
The Metro closure follows a major upgrade at Newcastle Airport, part of a larger project to grow passenger numbers to eight million by 2035 and nine million by 2040. The recent work included refurbishing the departures area with 450 new seats.
Separately, two West Yorkshire train stations will close for two weeks from mid-September for major upgrades. Huddersfield and Slaithwaite stations will be closed from September 19 to October 4, including completion of the new £70 million Huddersfield station.
