Newcastle International Airport has introduced new security technology that allows passengers to leave liquids and electrical items in their hand baggage during screening. Despite the upgrade, the longstanding 100ml rule for liquids remains in place.
What are the liquid rules?
The airport's website states: "Passengers must ensure any liquids, aerosols and gels within hand luggage, are in individual containers up to 100ml. Liquids, aerosols and gels greater than 100ml are not permitted. All liquids, aerosols and gels will be subject to an automated screening process which will ultimately determine if they can be taken on your journey."
Double-skinned containers, such as thermos flasks or thermal water bottles, cannot be scanned and will not be permitted through security. Empty double-skinned containers are allowed. The airport advises that catering outlets in the departure lounge can provide hot or cold water.
For a smoother journey, the airport recommends packing as many liquids as possible in hold baggage.
Do you need plastic bags?
Passengers are not required to put liquids in a clear plastic bag. When going through security, everything can stay in the bag – liquids and electricals do not need to be removed from hand luggage.
Baby milk or formula
Travellers with a baby can take enough milk or formula for the journey. The airport advises: "Please allow slightly more time at security to allow for the liquid to undergo some additional security checks."
Alternatively, milk can be pre-ordered at Boots and collected in the departure lounge. Orders must be placed online at least five working days before the flight. All liquids in hand luggage must be under 100ml, but an exception is made for the amount of milk or formula needed for the journey.
