Newark Liberty International Airport was temporarily closed on Wednesday evening after a JetBlue flight made an emergency landing due to engine failure. Flight 543, an Airbus A320, had departed for West Palm Beach, Florida, shortly before 5.45pm when the incident occurred.
The aircraft returned to Newark and landed safely, but smoke was detected in the cockpit shortly after. Crew members ordered an immediate evacuation via the emergency inflatable slides onto the tarmac as emergency services responded. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed that flight operations were suspended while the aircraft was removed from a taxiway. Normal operations resumed around 7pm, and travellers were advised to check with their airlines for updates on potential delays or cancellations.
One passenger expressed confusion on social media, noting that all flights were grounded and questioning what had happened.
