New Cambridge Station for Oxford-Cambridge Rail Link Unveiled

First Glimpse at New English Train Station Linking Two World-Famous Cities

East West Railway has unveiled a revised proposal for a new railway line in Cambridgeshire, aiming to transform transport links between Oxford and Cambridge. The plans include a new entrance at Cambridge railway station, designed to enhance accessibility and aesthetics for residents and local businesses.

Enhanced Accessibility and Design

According to East West Rail (EWR), the new entrance on Clifton Road will make the station more convenient and attractive. It will be fully accessible, providing step-free access to all platforms, ensuring ease of use for all passengers.

Massive £6 Billion Project

This initiative is part of a substantial £6 billion project that also proposes a new station in Cambourne, a growing town in Cambridgeshire. The project aims to improve east-west transport links, which are currently hindered by poor connectivity, often requiring journeys via London or congested roads.

Public Consultation Underway

An eight-week consultation is currently in progress, running from April 14 to June 9, as part of the final phases to obtain building permission. Public drop-in events are being held to provide further information on the revised proposals, allowing community input before construction begins.

Timeline and Operational Details

Once permission is granted, work is scheduled to start in 2027, with EWR estimating that the Cambridge station will be operational by mid-2030. The new route will link Oxford, Milton Keynes, Bedford, and Cambridge, offering up to five trains per hour to make journeys faster and more convenient.

Economic and Regional Impact

Network Rail highlights that the Oxford–Cambridge region is one of the UK’s most productive areas, generating over £143 billion annually and supporting around two million jobs, many in high-skill industries. With world-leading universities and major research centres, it serves as a hub for innovation and investment. Improved transport links are expected to boost access to jobs and services, fostering regional growth.

Inclusion of Universal Resort

The updated plans also account for the new Universal Resort near Bedford, currently under construction, with a station at Stewartby earmarked to serve the theme park. Gidon Freeman, Vice-President of External Affairs at Universal Destinations and Experiences, noted that the central location and excellent transport links were key factors in selecting the site, and East West Rail will further enhance connectivity for guests and team members.

This project represents a significant step forward in addressing transport challenges and supporting economic development in the region, with the potential to revolutionize travel between these iconic cities.
