A new bus shelter has been installed at a popular stop in the North Lodge area of Motherwell. The facility is in place at the stop where North Lodge Avenue adjoins with the neighbouring street of Cunningair Drive.
Delays and complaints prompt action
In previous months, it was brought to the attention of Councillor Nathan Wilson that services had been regularly arriving late at the stop, leaving local residents waiting for the bus in heavy rain. Councillor Wilson raised the matter with the chief executive of SPT and asked for a new shelter to be introduced at the bus stop.
SPT responded to advise that funding for such work was available and a shelter would now be put in place at the stop in 2026/27. SPT also set out that whilst the programme of work for the current financial year had not yet been finalised, the proposed shelter at North Lodge Avenue and Cunningair Drive would be prioritised.
Work scheduled and completed
In further correspondence with Councillor Wilson, the SPT chief executive advised that the work to introduce the shelter had been scheduled with North Lanarkshire's Roadworks Register for Friday, August 21.
Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig Councillor Mr Wilson said: "It was a significant concern to be informed that local people including elderly and disabled constituents had been faced with lengthy waits in heavy rain for delayed bus services to appear at this particular stop in North Lodge.
"I contacted SPT to highlight the negative experiences of constituents and stressed the need for a shelter to be installed at the stop to shield local residents from poor weather conditions when waiting for a bus."
Positive outcome for residents
The reply from SPT was positive and with notification that agreement had been reached on the introduction of a shelter over the coming months. "It is great news that the planned work was then carried out towards the end of August.
"Whilst the weather is still mainly dry during the warm summer months, we are again starting to experience some periods of rainfall and it is fantastic to see that the new bus stop shelter has been introduced before winter arrives later in the year."
