Roadworks are already causing major delays to transport routes across Merseyside, and there are set to be further delays and road closures this weekend to accommodate music festivals.
Thousands of Roadworks Planned
According to information previously published by the ECHO, and covering the period between August 3 to August 10, there are more than 1,000 roadwork projects planned across the city, ranging from high- to low-impact, including 111 projects which will require some road closures.
Festival Restrictions in Bootle and Sefton Park
Traffic restrictions for the annual Salt and Tar music festival in Bootle are currently in place, concluding on Monday, August 17. Irlam Road will be closed for the event's duration along with a diversion route from Merton Road. The restrictions will be lifted at 11pm on the festival's final night.
Road closures will also be in place around Sefton Park to accommodate Cream's In The Park festival tonight (Saturday, August 15). Lewis Capaldi will headline the show with closures in place across until Sunday, August 16.
There will be "no waiting" cones positioned around the edge of the park to protect junctions and in areas to allow traffic to move freely. Cones will also be placed around road junctions to protect access. The capacity of additional car parking areas will be managed.
Greenbank Lane will be closed at Greenbank Road, but access will remain in place for residents and businesses only. The area of the park between Croxteth Gate and the roundabout at Aigburth Drive will be closed to general traffic and used as car parking. This will also be used for Shuttle Bus operation.
There are closures in and around Aigburth Drive/Lark Lane, which will be in place for most of the day to assist and make safe for people heading to and from the event. This means diversion routes will be in place during these periods. However, residents and business access will be allowed.
Traffic restrictions will apply from 6am on a rolling basis every two hours before the event and until approximately one hour after the show finishes. Additional restrictions will be in place between Aigburth Drive and Croxteth Gate until the end of the event.
Ongoing Works on Rice Lane and Queens Drive
For the past three weeks, and up to August 28, parts of Rice Lane will be reduced to one lane in both directions, and is subject to 40 days of ongoing highway improvement works and utility repair and maintenance work.
It has resulted in delays in both directions, especially during rush hour where traffic has been seen backed up across the nearby roundabout and onto County Road.
The ECHO understands not all lane or road closures are related to works commissioned by Liverpool City Council (LCC), with many of the roadworks managed by utility companies looking to upgrade infrastructure.
However, several of the projects are facilitated by LCC including at the junction of Queens Drive and Dovedale Road in Mossley Hill, where people have complained about poor planning, inadequate consultation and anti-social working hours.
On July 31, LCC published an update on its Facebook page, detailing the extent of the roadworks along Queens Drive and locations of the affected areas, including Heywood Road and East Prescot Road (northbound only), Alder Road and Mill Lane (northbound only), Townsend Avenue and Utting Avenue (both directions), and Stanley Park Avenue North to Walton Hall Avenue (both directions).
