The private plane departed from Butler Memorial Airport just before 11:30 a.m. local time. For an unknown reason, the aircraft turned back and subsequently crashed near Business 49 Highway, as stated by a spokesperson for Bates County Emergency Management.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesman confirmed the fatalities, stating: "Troopers are on scene assisting the Butler Police Department & Bates County Sheriff’s Office of a Fatal Plane Crash near the Butler Memorial Airport.
