Celtic Chief Executive Officer Michael Nicholson has been elected to the SPFL board for the 2026/27 season, replacing former Rangers supremo Patrick Stewart. The Parkhead chief was voted in by all 42 clubs as one of seven representatives for the upcoming campaign.
Nicholson's Appointment and Context
Nicholson's election sees him replace Patrick Stewart, who was dismissed last November along with sporting director Kevin Thelwell following the disastrous appointment of Russell Martin. Despite Celtic securing a league and cup Double in the 2025/26 season, Nicholson faced intense scrutiny throughout the campaign. The Hoops board endured constant criticism from fans over underwhelming recruitment, missing out on £40 million in Champions League prize money, the Wilfried Nancy debacle, and the banning of the Green Brigade.
Reconciliation and Future Plans
Martin O'Neill managed to soothe tensions and broker a truce towards the end of the season, helping Celtic reel in Hearts and claim the title on the final day. However, scrutiny is expected to intensify as the summer progresses, with a major squad overhaul anticipated. O'Neill is set to be appointed as the club's permanent manager, though questions are being raised about the delay in finalizing the appointment.
New Board Members and Rule Changes
Joining Nicholson on the board from fellow Premiership clubs are Malcolm McPherson of Hibernian and Phyllis Carroll of Kilmarnock. Clubs also voted to approve changes to SPFL rules, including introducing minimum machinery and staffing requirements for William Hill Premiership clubs to improve standards of natural grass and hybrid surfaces. Kilmarnock has replaced its plastic pitch with a new hybrid surface following a ban on astroturf.
