Tyne and Wear Metro services have resumed after a suspension lasting nearly an hour between Pelaw and South Shields on Saturday evening, following a train hitting an object on the tracks.
No trains were running on the yellow line in both directions as a result of the incident, with Nexus sharing updates on social media.
Service suspension details
At around 7.40pm on Saturday, the Tyne and Wear Metro account on X posted: "Customer information: We currently have a service suspension between South Shields and Pelaw in both directions.
"This is due to a train hitting an object on the line. Ticket acceptance is in place on the following Go North East services: 25, 26, 27, 35 and 36."
Approximately 25 minutes later, Nexus shared further information, stating that the service remained suspended and that staff were on site to assess the affected train. Ticket acceptance remained in place on the same Go North East bus services.
Resumption and impact
Just before 8.35pm, a post announced the end of the suspension, noting that services had resumed between Pelaw and South Shields, although trains were behind schedule. The post also confirmed that Go North East services 25, 26, 27, 35, and 36 were still accepting Metro Pop cards and tickets within the affected area, and advised passengers to leave extra time for their journeys.
The affected section of the network is a well-used route, taking travellers from Gateshead to the coast via places such as Jarrow and Hebburn. With ticket acceptance available for buses, those using public transport on a busy Saturday evening were given an alternative.
