The Tyne and Wear Metro has begun a nine-day closure of the line between South Gosforth and the Airport, starting today (Saturday). The closure is necessary for improvement works described as 'vital to the long-term future of the Metro'.
Improvement works and replacement buses
Improvements will be conducted both day and night on this section of the green line. During the works, a replacement bus service will be available, making stops at or near all affected Metro stations.
Nexus is also advising residents living close to the Metro lines to prepare for the works, as they will involve the use of a tamper and rail grinder.
£7.94 million Regent Centre project
Nexus has announced a £7.94 million renewal project at Regent Centre that will transform the station concourse and upgrade the platforms. This project includes the removal of the large metal canopy that currently covers the station's roadway and Metro lines, which will occur during the closure.
Additionally, during the closure, various other improvements will be made, including upgrades at Callerton Parkway, Bank Foot, Kingston Park, Fawdon, and Wansbeck Road. The work will also involve track renewal, cable repairs, and management of the lineside estate.
Advice for customers
Paul Welford, major projects director at Nexus, said: "We are carrying out a major programme of renewal work right along Metro’s Green line between South Gosforth and Airport from this Saturday for nine consecutive days. I would like to apologise in advance for the disruption the works may cause to our customers and to our lineside neighbours."
"The range of work we are carrying out is vital for Metro's long-term future. In many cases, there will be large numbers of workers on track, and heavy machinery and rail maintenance vehicles will be in use."
"Our plans consider school holidays, to ensure the least possible disruption to customers and the most efficient works. By scheduling these works during the schools' summer break, we can avoid impacting busier commutes, and less congestion on the roads should speed up alternative travel times on replacement buses."
"Customers are advised to plan ahead and allow plenty of extra time to make their journeys through the affected area."
The green line will reopen to passengers on Monday, August 24.
