Merseyrail Hunts Cross line closed for four weeks from October 11

Train services on the Hunts Cross line (Northern Line) will be fully cancelled for four weeks from Sunday, October 11 to Saturday, November 7, 2026. Services are expected to return to normal on Saturday, November 7.

£3.5 million tunnel project

The closure is due to a £3.5 million Network Rail engineering project to strengthen and waterproof four tunnels. The work is intended to prevent water from damaging the 750V electrified third rail and causing unplanned disruptions.

Replacement bus services

From Mondays to Saturdays, buses will run between Hunts Cross and Moorfields. Trains will still operate between Liverpool Central and Southport, Ormskirk, and Headbolt Lane.

On Sundays, buses will run between Hunts Cross and Sandhills. Trains will run between Sandhills and Southport, Ormskirk, and Headbolt Lane.

Wirral Line changes

On October 11 and October 18, Wirral Line trains will terminate at James Street; no trains will call at Moorfields, Lime Street, or Liverpool Central. On October 25 and November 1, replacement buses will run between Birkenhead North/Rock Ferry and Moorfields.

On October 11 and 18, platform 2 at James Street will lack lift access. Passengers needing step-free access are advised to travel via Hamilton Square. An accessible bus will run between Hamilton Square and Moorfields every 30 minutes.
