Manchester Airport has shared a little-known tip for passengers to beat queues at security: choose the left lane over the right. The advice comes as schools break up for the summer holidays, with thousands of families jetting off abroad.
Why the Left Lane Is Faster
The airport explained that most passengers are right-handed and subconsciously prefer the right lane, making the left a quieter option. While this may not help during peak travel periods, it can save time when passengers are given a choice of security lanes.
Record Passenger Numbers and Quick Security
In June, Manchester Airport welcomed more than three million passengers, its busiest month on record. Despite the high volume, 92% of people waited 10 minutes or less to pass through security.
Liquid Rules Still Apply
All passengers must still comply with the 100ml liquid rule for hand luggage, despite the installation of new CT scanners. Anything pourable or spreadable at room temperature is classed as a liquid, and containers must be 100ml or less and clearly labelled. Items like snowglobes and children's squishy toys can catch travellers out; if in doubt, pack them in checked bags.
New Scanners and Clothing Tips
Thanks to the new scanners, travellers no longer need to remove electronics from bags. However, loose outer clothing like jackets and coats, and metal items like belts, must still be removed. Dressing appropriately can speed up the process.
Express Menu Option
Another time-saving tip from the airport is to ask if an airport restaurant offers an express menu. Many eateries in departures provide this, guaranteeing a maximum 15-minute preparation time.
