Man Utd new Ederson transfer timeline after World Cup call

Manchester United are working on a new timetable to complete their £35million deal for Ederson after the midfielder earned a late call-up to the Brazil squad for the World Cup.

United have finalised a deal with Atalanta to sign the 26-year-old, which will also see them pay up to £3.8million in add-ons, while a four-year contract with the option of an extra year has been agreed with the player.

But Ederson is yet to undergo a medical and sign the paperwork to complete his transfer to Old Trafford, and that was due to be completed in early July.

That timeframe might now need to be altered after he was called up by Carlo Ancelotti on Sunday as a replacement for the injured full-back Wesley in Brazil's 26-man squad.

Ederson will join up with his international teammates at their Columbia Park training base in New Jersey on Monday and the Selecao get their tournament underway against Morocco on Saturday.

It's not impossible that Ederson completes his transfer to United during the World Cup, though it would require the player and the Brazilian football federation (CBF) to be on board.

The more likely timeframe now is that Ederson will undergo a medical and complete the paperwork for his Old Trafford switch once Brazil's World Cup is over, before the midfielder is granted a summer break.

Ederson's elevation to Brazil's squad, having not won a cap since March 2025, means he will be delayed in starting pre-season training at Carrington.

He had previously been expected to spend all summer with United and to be available for the start of the pre-season fixture schedule against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18.

That game comes the day before the World Cup final and, as with the rest of the United players involved in North America, Ederson will now be given some time off between the end of his tournament and his return for pre-season training.
