A 65-year-old highway worker from Kent has died after being struck by a van on the M23 motorway near Gatwick Airport, prompting a major closure and disruption for commuters. The incident occurred on the southbound carriageway between Junction 8 (M25 interchange) and Junction 10 (Crawley), which remained shut for most of the day.
Police confirmed the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Sergeant Chris Ambrose said: “A highways worker, a 65-year-old man from Kent, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time.” He urged witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
A 38-year-old man from Croydon, the driver of the van, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink driving. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
National Highways reported the southbound carriageway was closed from J8 to J10, with a diversion route via the A22 and A264. Motorists were advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol. The closure lasted over ten hours, causing significant delays.
London Gatwick Airport advised travellers to allow extra time for journeys, noting the M23 closure between J8 and J10. The airport stated on social media: “Anyone driving to London Gatwick this morning is advised to leave more time for their journey due to a serious road traffic collision.”
