Two people have died after a car drove down the wrong side of the A40 in Acton, west London, and collided with a coach following a police pursuit. The incident occurred at approximately 21:00 GMT on Sunday, about 20 minutes after the pursuit began.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a man and a woman were killed in the crash. A second man was taken to a major trauma centre with injuries, the extent of which has not been confirmed. No other serious injuries were reported.
The pursuit started in Harrow around 20:40 following reports of an aggravated burglary in Pinner. Four men reportedly forced their way into a home, threatening residents with a large hunting knife and a screwdriver. The suspects demanded valuables and threatened to kill the occupants.
Police stated that officers did not follow the vehicle when it drove on the wrong side of the A40. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an independent investigation into the collision, as is standard procedure.
IOPC regional director Jonathan Green expressed condolences and confirmed investigators are gathering evidence. Roads near the A40’s junction with Kingsdown Avenue were closed and reopened at 07:45 on Monday.
