Drivers are facing major delays on the M74 after an earlier crash sparked huge queues on the busy motorway. Traffic Scotland warned at around 4pm that northbound traffic was heavily congested between Junction 12 and Junction 11, with delays of at least 21 minutes on the approach.
Witness reports of total chaos
One witness described the scenes as "mega traffic" on the M74, claiming there was "total chaos" for drivers. They also alleged that some motorists were using the hard shoulder as they attempted to get past the congestion.
The disruption follows an earlier incident at Junction 11 at around 5.50am on Sunday morning. The motorway was closed following the incident until shortly before 10am, with traffic later able to pass while repair work was carried out to a damaged barrier.
Ongoing lane closure and queues
Traffic Scotland subsequently warned that one northbound lane remained closed while the repairs were completed. The knock-on effect has continued into the afternoon, with long queues building between Junctions 12 and 11.
Traffic Scotland said: "The M74 has heavily queuing traffic northbound between Junction 12-11 due to an earlier road traffic collision. Delays approx. 21 minutes on approach."
Drivers are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys and approach the area with care. Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
