The M66 motorway near Manchester remains closed in both directions following a lorry collision that caused significant damage to the central reservation. The incident occurred around 6:45am on Tuesday, June 2, between junctions 1 and 2 near Bury.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed no injuries were reported, but debris from the vehicle spread across several lanes, leading to lengthy delays. Southbound traffic faced six-mile congestion with 45-minute delays, while northbound delays reached 20 minutes with two miles of congestion.
National Highways stated that complex recovery and infrastructure repairs are underway. Lane 2 remains closed on the northbound carriageway due to barrier damage. A diversion route is in place via the A56 and A58.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene with two fire engines from Ramsbottom and Bury. Motorists are advised to check National Highways' social media and website for updates and plan journeys accordingly.
