Two separate crashes on the M62 near Huddersfield caused significant disruption on Tuesday, with delays of up to 90 minutes and queues stretching 12 miles.
A five-vehicle crash and subsequent vehicle fire on the westbound carriageway between junction 24 (Ainley Top) and junction 23 (New Hey Road) led to the closure of the motorway. Highways England reported that occupants escaped before the vehicles caught fire, suffering only minor injuries.
Meanwhile, a separate three-vehicle collision on the eastbound carriageway between junction 26 (Chain Bar) and junction 27 (Gildersome) added to the delays, with traffic held temporarily and one lane remaining closed after release.
West Yorkshire Police urged drivers to avoid the area, while the fire service confirmed attendance at the vehicle fire. Traffic has since returned to normal, with remaining delays cleared.
